Oban

The name Oban comes from "an t-Òban" which in Scottish Gaelic means "The Little Bay"

The Second World War

During The Second World War, Oban was a busy port used by merchant & Royal Navy ships. The port played a big role during the war itself but now there is only one surviving air raid shelter in the centre of Oban.

The port was important during the Cold War due to the first Transatlantic Telephone Cable coming ashore at Gallanach Bay. This was the direct "Hot Line" between the US & USSR Presidents.
